EQUIPMENT
Evaporative cell condensed water collection tank.
MATERIAL
PHENCOTE protective coating.
PROBLEM
Deterioration of the existing protective coating, with chipping, loss of adhesion, blistering and thinning.
SOLUTION
Resolving the deterioration of the protective coating on the inner concrete surfaces of the tank involved several steps. Initially, the damaged coating was completely removed by peeling and mechanical methods. The surfaces were then prepared by sandblasting to ensure proper adhesion of the new materials. The next step was the application of a protective coating called PHENCOTE. To ensure long-term protection, the process involved the application of a two-component anti-corrosive cement mortar to protect the reinforcement bars. The areas lacking material were filled with a fibre-reinforced two-component mortar and corrosion inhibitor specially designed to repair concrete. The surfaces were then smoothed and levelled using a fibre-reinforced trowelable mortar. To create elastic joints around the perimeter of the tank bottom and walls, a two-component self-curing rubber was applied. This was followed by the application of a three-component epoxy cement primer that acts as a barrier and waterproofs against positive/negative water pressure and rising damp. The primer was applied in several layers to achieve a final thickness of 1000-1200 microns. Finally, the PHENCOTE Marathon 550 protective coating was applied in two successive layers using compressed air spraying technology. This coating provides definitive protection for concrete surfaces immersed in seawater. To ensure the desired thickness of 1200 microns, alternating red and white colours were used for each layer. The solution involved careful preparation of the surfaces, repair of the damaged areas and the application of a multi-layer protective coating system to ensure the long-term integrity of the concrete surfaces in the condensed water collection tank.
