INDUSTRY
Refining.
EQUIPMENT
E-116 air coolers.
MATERIAL
Carbon steel for the tube plates, Aluminium SA789 S-32750 for the tube bundle.
PROBLEM
Corrosive/erosive phenomena on tube plates.
SOLUTION
The proposed solution to address the corrosive/erosive phenomena on the tube plates of E-116 coolers was to apply a PHENCOTE UCR/UHT protective coating. This coating is designed to offer protection against corrosion in high-temperature and aggressive chemical environments. It is applied by high-pressure spraying using an AIRLESS system. To further improve the system’s chemical resistance and friction performance with the process fluid, a high-temperature-resistant molecular metal bead is built into the interface areas between the plates and bundle tubes to eliminate sharp and pointy edges. The treatment also involves preparing the surface by degreasing and sandblasting to remove any oily residues, grease, oxides and build-up. Visual inspections and thickness checks are performed to ensure the quality of the coating. In addition, corroded/eroded areas are patched and surface roughness checks are performed. The proposed application of the PHENCOTE UCR/UHT coating and other preparation and inspection activities effectively protect the tube plates from corrosive/erosive phenomena, ensuring a longer life and improved reliability of the E-116 heat exchangers.
